1K, 3K, 12K carbon fiber plain weave fabrics are high-performance textile materials made from carbon fiber. Plain weave fabrics are woven in alternating warp and weft, which are flat and wear-resistant. 1K fabric is light and thin, suitable for high-precision small structures; 3K fabric has moderate strength and is widely used in aerospace, automotive and other fields; 12K fabric is thicker and suitable for large areas and high strength requirements, such as wind turbine blades and building reinforcement. Carbon fiber fabrics are lightweight, corrosion-resistant and high-strength.

Carbon Fiber Plain Weave Fabric
Plain weave carbon fiber fabric manufactured from Toray, Mitsubishi, or Zoltek carbon fiber tows in 1K, 3K, and 12K filament counts. The weave structure features a symmetric one-over-one-under interlacing pattern, providing balanced mechanical properties in the 0-degree and 90-degree directions. Areal weight ranges from 80 gsm (1K) to 600 gsm (12K). Standard widths available from 100 mm to 1,600 mm. The fabric exhibits tensile strength of 3,500-4,800 MPa and tensile modulus of 230-240 GPa, with thickness per ply ranging from 0.08 mm to 0.42 mm depending on tow size and areal weight.

Handling and processing notes
Cutting: Use pneumatic scissors or CNC knife cutters. Laser cutting may cause edge melting on thermoplastic sizing. Waterjet suitable for high-volume production.
Resin infusion: Permeability varies with tow size. 1K and 3K fabrics require lower injection pressure (0.2-0.4 MPa). 12K fabrics allow faster flow rates (0.5-0.8 MPa).
Draping: Pre-heating to 40-50°C improves conformability for complex 3D shapes. Avoid stretching beyond 2 percent elongation to prevent weave distortion.
Consolidation: Vacuum bag pressure 0.08-0.1 MPa. Autoclave curing at 120-180°C depending on resin system. Post-cure cycle per resin manufacturer specifications.
Common questions
Selecting between 1K, 3K, and 12K
1K provides finest surface texture and conformability for complex shapes. 3K offers balance of cost and cosmetic appearance. 12K is cost-optimized for structural applications where surface finish is less critical.
Shelf life and storage conditions
12 months at 5-25°C with relative humidity below 60 percent. Store in original packaging. Sizing degradation may occur if exposed to temperature above 35°C for extended periods.
Repair of damaged plain weave fabric
Localized damage can be repaired by patching with matching tow size fabric. Overlap patch by 25 mm minimum on each side. Cure with same resin system at reduced temperature.
