Abrasion-Resistant And High-Temperature-Resistant Carbon Fiber Twill Weave Fabric

Wear-resistant and heat-resistant carbon fiber twill weave fabric is made of carbon fiber yarns woven by the twill process. It has the properties of wear resistance, tensile strength, high-temperature resistance, lightweight and high strength. It can withstand temperatures up to 200℃ without deformation or damage and has chemical corrosion resistance. The twill weave structure gives it a smooth surface, good flexibility and easy cutting and fitting. It is suitable for aerospace, automobile manufacturing, sports equipment and industrial machinery.

Abrasion-Resistant And High-Temperature-Resistant Carbon Fiber Twill Weave Fabric
Twill weave fabric main view
Carbon fiber twill weave fabric (2x2) engineered with a high-temperature sizing system compatible with polyimide, BMI, and phenolic resin matrices. The abrasion-resistant surface treatment increases inter-ply shear strength to 75-95 MPa after lamination. Continuous operating temperature range of -200°C to 350°C with short-term exposure up to 400°C. The twill structure provides enhanced drapability over complex geometries while maintaining damage tolerance against localized abrasion. Available in 3K and 6K tow sizes with areal weight of 200-400 gsm. The fabric exhibits tensile strength of 3,800-4,500 MPa and retains 85 percent of mechanical properties after 500 hours at 300°C.

Abrasion resistance
Surface treatment increases abrasion resistance measured by Taber abrasion (CS-17 wheel, 1,000 cycles) with weight loss below 25 mg, maintaining surface integrity in high-wear environments.
Thermal stability
High-temperature sizing maintains fiber-matrix adhesion at 350°C continuous service. Thermal decomposition onset above 420°C under nitrogen atmosphere (TGA analysis).
Twill drapability
2x2 twill geometry provides conformability to radii down to 3 mm without wrinkling, suitable for autoclave and compression molding of complex aerospace components.
Damage tolerance
The interlacing pattern arrests crack propagation in the laminate, providing 30-40 percent higher fracture toughness than plain weave equivalents of similar areal weight.

Handling and processing notes
Cutting: Use carbide-tipped blades or waterjet cutting. Laser cutting may oxidize the high-temperature sizing. Pre-heat cutting tools to 50°C for clean edges.
Resin selection: High-temperature sizing is optimized for polyimide and BMI resins. For phenolic systems, verify sizing compatibility through wettability testing prior to production.
Processing temperature: Pre-heat molds to 120-150°C before layup to improve tack. Cure cycles should include a 1-hour dwell at 200°C before ramp to final cure temperature.
Storage: Store in moisture-proof packaging with desiccant at 5-25°C. Shelf life 6 months. Exposure to humidity above 60 percent RH for more than 24 hours requires drying at 80°C for 2 hours.
Frequently asked questions
+ How does the abrasion-resistant treatment affect resin bonding?
The sizing system is chemically activated during cure, creating covalent bonds with polyimide and BMI matrices. Interlaminar shear strength of 75-95 MPa exceeds untreated fabric by 25-35 percent.
+ Maximum continuous service temperature with different resins
With polyimide: 350°C continuous, 400°C peak. With BMI: 300°C continuous, 350°C peak. With phenolic: 280°C continuous. Above 350°C, residual strength retention drops to 70-80 percent after 1,000 hours.
+ Can this fabric be used in oxidative environments above 300°C?
The carbon fiber itself is oxidation-resistant up to 400°C in air. For applications above 350°C in oxygen-rich environments, a ceramic-based protective coating is recommended to prevent surface oxidation.
