Epoxy Compatible Carbon Fiber Cloth

Formulated sizing system designed to maximize interfacial bond strength with epoxy resin systems
98% Interfacial shear retention after 1000h at 80°C

Epoxy Compatible Carbon Fiber Cloth features a proprietary sizing formulation that is chemically matched to epoxy resin systems, ensuring optimal wet-out, adhesion, and stress transfer at the fiber-matrix interface. The sizing agent is applied during the final manufacturing stage and is characterized by a uniform distribution of polar functional groups that react with epoxy hardeners during cure. This cloth is available in a range of tow sizes (3k, 6k, 12k) and weave patterns, with areal weights from 160 to 800 g/m². The sizing is designed to maintain stability during storage while promoting rapid dissolution into the epoxy matrix during infusion, prepreg consolidation, or hand layup processes.

Epoxy Compatibility Metrics

Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) ≥ 65 MPa (microbond test)
Wet-out contact angle < 25° (epoxy resin at 25°C)
Sizing solubility in epoxy Complete within 5 min at 40°C
Void content (cured laminate) ≤ 1.2% (ASTM D2734)
Glass transition retention ≥ 95% of neat resin Tg
Aging resistance (80°C / 1000h) IFSS retention ≥ 98%

Recommended Epoxy Systems

Resin type Viscosity (cP) Cure schedule Application
Infusion epoxy (low-viscosity) 80 – 200 24h @ 25°C + 4h @ 80°C VARTM, vacuum infusion
Prepreg epoxy (tackified) NA (solid at 25°C) 120°C / 1h or 180°C / 30min Autoclave, press molding
Hand layup epoxy (medium) 400 – 800 24h @ 25°C + 2h @ 60°C Tooling, repair, prototyping
Fast-cure epoxy 150 – 350 2h @ 80°C High-volume production

Key Advantages for Epoxy Processing

  • Eliminates sizing incompatibility issues common with general-purpose carbon cloths
  • Reduces void formation due to complete sizing dissolution during resin infiltration
  • Provides consistent laminate mechanical properties across batch-to-batch production
  • Compatible with both room-temperature and elevated-temperature epoxy systems
  • Minimizes fiber bridging and dry spots in thick laminates

Technical Notes

Sizing compatibility test Perform a simple wet-out test by placing a drop of epoxy resin on the cloth; complete wet-out within 60 seconds indicates proper compatibility.
Pre-cure drying For moisture-sensitive epoxy systems, dry the cloth at 60°C for 2 hours prior to layup to remove adsorbed moisture.
Post-cure optimization A post-cure cycle of 4 hours at 150°C is recommended for maximum Tg and interlaminar fracture toughness.
Thickness build-up Cured ply thickness ranges from 0.20 mm (160 g/m²) to 1.10 mm (800 g/m²) depending on compaction pressure and resin content.
ASTM D2344 (ILSS) ASTM D6484 (Open-hole compression) ISO 15024 (Mode I fracture) EN 2564 (Sizing content)

Sizing formulation and fabric construction are validated against these standards to ensure reproducible performance in epoxy-based composite structures.
