Bidirectional Carbon Fiber Cloth

Symmetric fiber architecture delivering balanced in-plane mechanical properties
1:1 Fiber ratio 0°/90°
±2° Weave angle tolerance

Bidirectional Carbon Fiber Cloth features a balanced 0°/90° weave architecture where equal fiber volume is oriented in both principal directions. This symmetric construction provides near-isotropic in-plane stiffness and strength, eliminating the need for complex ply stacking sequences in many applications. The cloth is available in plain, twill, and satin weaves with tow sizes from 3k to 12k and areal weights ranging from 200 to 800 g/m². The balanced fiber distribution ensures consistent mechanical response regardless of load direction, making it suitable for panels, enclosures, and structural skins where multi-directional loading is anticipated.

Balanced Mechanical Properties

0°/90° Tensile strength ratio
0.95 Modulus ratio (E1/E2)
400 MPa Typical tensile strength (laminate)
45 GPa Typical tensile modulus (laminate)
0.30 Poisson's ratio (in-plane)
1.0 Shear coupling factor
Values based on 400 g/m² plain weave laminate with epoxy matrix at 55% fiber volume.

Weave Options & Characteristics

Plain weave Balanced crimp · High stability · Moderate drape Flat panels, tooling, structural skins
2x2 Twill Reduced crimp · Improved drape · Good conformability Curved surfaces, automotive parts, marine
4-Harness Satin Low crimp · Excellent drape · Smooth surface finish Complex shapes, cosmetic surfaces, aerospace
8-Harness Satin Minimal crimp · Superior drape · Highest conformability Deep-draw tooling, highly contoured parts

Bidirectional Advantages

  • Eliminates ply orientation errors during layup
  • Reduces design and analysis complexity for symmetric laminates
  • Provides uniform thermal expansion behavior in all in-plane directions
  • Simplifies quality control with symmetrical weave inspection
  • Minimizes warpage during cure due to balanced shrinkage

Layup & Design Tips

Symmetry For balanced laminates, use bidirectional cloth in all plies to maintain symmetry.
Thickness build Each ply contributes equally to thickness; calculate total thickness as N × cured ply thickness.
Joint design Overlap joints should be oriented at 45° to the weave to distribute load across both axes.
Drape optimization Use satin weaves for double-curvature molds; plain weave for flat or single-curvature.

Quick Q&A

Is bidirectional cloth quasi-isotropic? Near-isotropic in-plane; for true quasi-isotropic, add ±45° plies or use multi-axial fabric.
Can I orient the cloth off-axis? Yes. Rotating the cloth by 45° creates a ±45° bias layup for shear-dominated applications.
What is the typical fiber volume? 55% – 60% with vacuum bagging; 50% – 55% for hand layup.
